This month marks 79 years since Operation Market Garden, and it has been equally long since the city of Nijmegen was liberated. To celebrate the occasion, the Freedom Museum is hosting its annual Freedom Market. Many people are already familiar with this event, which will take place on Sunday, September 24th, from 10:00–17:00. There will be plenty of activities for people of all ages, both in the museum and in the area around the museum. This includes our yearly free market for children!
There, children can place a picnic blanket on the ground near the Freedom Museum to sell their possessions for pocket money. They are also allowed to play instruments or set up other kinds of performances. Throughout the day, there will be special activities for children, for example: creating freedom skirts, drawing on the pavement, draw cartoons (or have them drawn), creating balloon animals with Kiko the Clown and taking pictures in front of a green screen.
Grateful Generation Tours is taking people on exciting field trips past the Market Garden battlefields in an authentic Willy's MB from WWII (2 to 3 people per trip). Live music will add extra flair to the day. Come and listen to Bill Baker’s Big Band, singer Mindy and Batavorum Pipes and Drums, among others. However, music is not the only thing you can listen to at the event: a radio show will be hosted using broadcasting and receiving equipment from WWII. Visitors are allowed to participate in this vintage spectacle. Peckish? No problem. There will be several food trucks and a bar to keep hunger and thirst at bay.
Continue the fun inside the museum, with ‘Double Agent’, the amazing temporary exposition where you unmask double agents from WWII and learn how misinformation works (even today)! Afterwards, go on a short highlight tour of the Freedom Museum's permanent exhibition. This tour past historic and current events takes 45 minutes. These tours take place from 13:00–13:45, 14:00–14:45 and 15:00–15:45. Children can go on special children's tours (8–12 y.o.). These take place from 11:45–12:45 and 14:45–15:45. Both the highlight tours and the children's tours need to be booked in advance. This can be done by sending an email to welkom@vrijheidsmuseum.nl.
The price of admission for the Freedom market is € 7.50 per adult. This price includes parking, access to the museum, the free market for children and all other activities at the Freedom Market except catering and Grateful Generation Tours. Museum Cards can be used. Other discounts or deals will not be applicable on this day (it is not possible to get a discount on top of the already discounted price).
Children participating in the free market can enter between 08:30 and 10:00 to find a spot for their blankets. After 10:00, the price of admission for children ages 7 to 17 will be € 3 per child. Children up to the age of 6 are admitted free.
